On February 14, 2019, parents in Broome County with children going to Union Endicott School District, received notices from the school of a whooping cough outbreak. The notice states at this time ,there is no confirmed case in Broome County. The noticed warned parents the outbreak is in a neighboring county, Tioga County. We've attached a copy of the notice in case some parents did not get it.
Pertussis or Whooping Cough as it is best known is a lung infection caused by bacteria. Whooping cough is very contagious and causes coughing fits. Symptoms appear in 3 stages: Stage One last 1-2 weeks runny nose, sneezing, low grade fever, mild cough acts like a common cold but then the cough gets worse. Stage Two can last 1-2 months as the cough gets more severe. The whoop means the person infected is trying to catch their breath. Sometimes a person can turn blue and vomit mucus or food. They also may stop breathing.
Stage Three may last weeks to months. This is the recovery phase, but coughing fits can come back if the person gets another respiratory illness.
